My Broken Legacy

In late September 1996, a classic was born. The first installment in a (as of now) four game series. Everyone has differing stories of how they came to be 'Stobbarts', mine came in the form of a compilation game set on the Playstation One, Help 3 in 1.

The first game on the set was Road Rash, a remake of an old Mega Drive game. I played it for five minutes and turned it off, unimpressed. The next game was Myst, a point and click adventure game which was spacy and atmospheric but also a bit boring. Again i was forced to switch it off.

£12 i had spent on this three game set, it was starting to feel like a bad decision. I then put in the final game of the set, a game called 'Broken Sword', described as a epic point 'n' click adventure. "It had better be" i thought to myself. Now at this point in my gaming 'career' i had stumbled upon two or three games that i would call Classics. 'Sonic 2' on the Mega Drive, 'Alundra' on the Playstation and my favorite game of all time at that point, the mighty 'Legend Of Zelda - A Link To The Past' on the SNES. "Now thats a epic adventure" i said to myself while pressing the power on button of the Playstation.

The Shadow Of The Templars came to life with a crow flying across a city which i would soon discover to be Paris. The next 20-30 hours i spent playing this game soon became the best 20-30 hours i'd ever spent gaming since the aforementioned Zelda game. Everything about 'The Shadow Of The Templars' completely absorbed me. The music was perfect, the graphics were beautiful, the characters were interesting and humourous and the plot was the finest i'd ever come across.

Broken Sword 1 jumped to the top of my favorite games ever list and to this day still comfortably holds a top 5 place. in the 13 years that followed that first game we've been treated to three sequels, a fan made sequel and numourous remakes upon different systems. The Broken Sword series remains up there with the best ever made. Think thats an exaggeration? Go back and replay the series and tell me im wrong.

The second Broken Sword game followed the style and feel of the first, with a great plot to match and became a worth sequel. The third and fouth games sent George and Nico into 3D, Some preferred this, some didnt. I personally found them to be as good as the two 2D games.

The Broken Sword series has been incredible to play, birthing characters we love and a story we want more of. This short blog-type-article was just the feelings of one person, one fan. Broken Sword Planet is the best fan site on the entire web, and i am honoured to be able to contribute my thoughts to this site. Long Live Broken Sword!
